2008 - North & West Africa

Alastair is back from a successful tour of Africa, where he led the pack on his unsuitable Ducati Multistrada as part of the GlobeBusters North & West Africa expedition.

My unsuitable bike did a great job, never missed a beat, and had no problems at all despite rough roads and searing heat in Africa's deserts and jungle. There is no prize for getting anywhere first but the Ducati finished every day ahead of big BMW touring bikes.

Alastair and the Globebusters expedition travelled across Morocco and down the West coast of Africa but sadly did not get to Guinea Bissau  as there were reports of terrorist attacks on tourists in Senegal that we needed to travel through to get there.  Instead the group saw more of The Gambia: Alastair passed through Georgetown, the old British Colonial slave port set on an Island in the Gambia river, before looping back into Senegal to visit St Louis.

The trip was a great success with only some minor problems, although Alastair did manage to fall off his bike in a minefield!  The 'exciting' mishap happened on the border between Morocco and Mauritania but happily the only long term damage was his ego.

There were some tricky border crossing but overall the Africans were most welcoming and loved seeing the group and their bikes.

The five week expedition, which started with a flight from Malaga before riding across Morocco, involved a group of 12 bikers. Alastair stood out from the popular BMW GS, endurance bikes and trials bikes and managed to finish near the front of the group on most days.
