Luca Montezemolo and the Clerk of the course at Watkins Glen get in to a fight following the Clerk’s decision to black-flag Clay Regazoni.
Here we have a very funny photo. I took this. The guy doing the punching is Luca Montezemolo, who is now the un-crowned King of Italy. He’s the man running Ferrari and running Fiat. He’s Angelli’s chosen son.
Luca was Ferrari team manager in ’74 and I was competing against him at Watkins Glen. Clay Regazoni, who was in the second Ferrari, was holding up my car. I went in the tower and complained and they blue-flagged Regazoni all round the circuit. American race tracks always have a start/finish with a gantry that sticks out and the officials are above the cars. They blue-flagged him from this gantry across the track and Clay gave them the fingers.
The Clerk of the course then black-flagged him for blocking my driver, Fittipaldi, and giving fingers to the officials. Luca wasn’t happy. He was team manager and in this picture the car was between them and they were shouting over the car. But when the car drove off Luca stepped in to have a go at the Clerk of the course, who’s twice his weight. This photo I then took, having indirectly instigated this punch-up, and it’s very funny.
