Peugeot 205

Alastair’s greatest achievements in Classic Rallying were in his little Peugeot 205 Rallye.

The fifteen year old Peugeot 205 Rallye had quite a history behind it before Alastair got behind the wheel. It is a French, left-hand drive 1300cc hatch-back that was used as a reccy car by the Peugeot Sports works team and driven by world champion rallyist, Richard Burns. It was then purchased by Richard Burns used as a road car. Alastair took it to the World Cup Rally in 2002 and won convincingly. He has taken part in the World Cup rallies five times in the Peugeot, winning four of them outright.

My victory in the 2005 World Cup Rally, London to Dakar, was one of my greatest achievements because I didn’t just win: I beat the sh*t out of them. And the cars I was up against weren’t all like mine, they were 4x4s and high-powered classic cars. Every morning my competitors would wake up and see me in my little Peugeot sitting at the front of the line. They always thought: ‘Oh well, he’s going to get stuck today,’ but I never did.
